One Nation Under God

One nation UNDER God!

“In 1954, at President Dwight D. Eisenhower's urging, the Congress legislated that ‘under God’ be added, making the pledge read: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” (Encyclopedia Britannica)

Did President Eisenhower see what was coming in America, or was it the preaching of his pastor, The Rev. George M. Docherty, New York Avenue Presbyterian Church who influenced him to make the change in our pledge?

“One nation UNDER God” doesn’t seem to have the same meaning today, in our “pluralistic society” where the people in America believe all kinds of different things. However, we know that believing something doesn’t make it true any more than rejecting the truth doesn’t disprove it. Truth is absolute for ALL people for ALL times. Perhaps the question we should ask again is this one,

“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" Psalm 11:3 (NIV)

What can we do? Thankfully, some things haven’t and won’t ever change for us. Regardless of the pluralistic beliefs of our society, we can continue to,

“6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7 (NIV)

No one can take away the privilege of prayer. “Opinions” abound about what is right and wrong today, but WE will forsake evil, and turn to the LORD for mercy and pardon for our sins. “Under God” is where we ALL ARE whether we accept that as truth or deny it vehemently. Let “under God” be the place and posture of our hearts, our homes, and our nation. For this is what the Lord promises to us when we are humble and submissive before Him.

“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

Recently, someone has asked the question, “How do we make America great again?” It starts and ends with all of us who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. We choose to take our place under God in submissive to HIM! For only as we unite our hearts and voices as ONE under God can we expect God to bless us.

Bless our nation, O God, that we may bring the message of the Gospel, the TRUTH, to the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. Psalm 33:12 (NIV)
